Sylvan Esso melts hearts as per usual at NPR’s Tiny Desk!
It’s hard to believe that it hasn’t quite been a year since the first Sylvan Esso album came out. The odd yet perfect marriage of Nick Sanborn’s electronics with Amelia Meath’s voice feels like a familiar friend by now. And yet seeing these songs performed softly — and captured in the light of day — made them feel fresh and lovable in new ways.

The folks at KCRW are just as excited about Heartless Bastards’ new single as we are. Here is what they have to say about “Gates of Dawn”:
Austin rockers Heartless Bastards return with a new album called “Restless Ones” on June 16.
They’ve shared the first single from their 5th studio album, which was produced by Grammy-award winning producer John Congleton (St. Vincent, Angel Olsen) and recorded over 10 days at Sonic Ranch, a pecan orchard in El Paso.
Singer Erika Wennerstrom’s powerhouse vocals — husky, soulful and commanding — drives their blues-driven rock sound and she found inspiration in literary touchstones like Haruki Murakami and Jack Kerouac for her lyrics.
With a killer chorus, “Gates of Dawn” is a great entry point for their latest musical journey.
Restless Ones drops on 6/16 via Partisan Records!
A year after signing to Warp, Nozinja’s first full length album, titled Nozinja Lodge, will be released June 2nd!

“Electric High’ by Death Valley Girls was AM1700′s Track of the Day!
Death Valley Girls are proto-punks of the modern age; so raw that their sound seems inspired by the ‘caveman rock’ of the Troggs. Their debut LP Street Venom (Burger Records) doesn’t seem to fit any neatly constructed genre; it’s stripped-down motorbike rock ‘n’ roll shrouded in mysterious overtones and a ghoulish blend of bluesy psychedelia and ’60s garage fuzz.

TORRES was among the few featured on this week’s episode of All Songs Considered: From Kate Tempest To Torres, Female Artists Shone At SXSW!
"[This] is Mackensie Scott. She, not too many years ago, was much more personal, sort of a cowboy hat-wearing, leaning more folk-y … Now it’s almost as if the spirit of Patti Smith has entered her body."

Get ready for the year of Heartless Bastards. The AAA radio world is unleashing the glory that is “Gates of Dawn,” the Austin, TX outfit’s first single from their upcoming album Restless Ones. Get an early listen from our pals at WFUV. Here’s what they have to say:
“I have awoken. The spell, it has been broken.” These are the first words Erika Wennerstrom sings in her rich and powerful alto on Heartless Bastards’ new song “Gates of Dawn.” We initially heard the song performed at SXSW this year in a special acoustic session for FUV at Hotel San Jose, and we were immediately spellbound—a feeling only magnified with the unveiling of the album version. It simultaneously announces a personal awakening and the arrival of this Austin-based band at new levels of songcraft and sonic landscapes.
Marking 10 years since their debut Stairs and Elevators, Heartless Bastards are ready to share the results of an intense, 10-day recording session with producer John Congleton: their aptly-titled fifth studio album, Restless Ones, which is out June 16th. The band says the experience of making the album was all about discovery, pushing boundaries, and allowing unexplored musical territories to seep into their signature rock and roll sound.
“Gates of Dawn” demonstrates that we have an exciting journey ahead of us as Heartless Bastards reveal newfound realms of musicianship and lyricism, as open as the sky.

The New Yorker unravels the eclectic sound behind Future Brown and what impact this will have on music’s future:
“Future Brown’s stylistic promiscuity aspires to a future built on eclecticism and color rather than on hierarchy and canon, velocity and rhythm rather than sing-along harmonies and riffs. In the best-case scenario, perhaps, this is a future where artists are no longer beholden to traditional structures for making and distributing music.”
