Artist Info: Two renowned Los Angeles musicians — composer and incendiary violinist-singer Lili Haydn and songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist Marvin Etzioni (of Lone Justice fame) — have joined forces to craft a vibe-y, haunting, roots-rich soundtrack for DriverX, an award-winning IFC Sundance Selects film.

Scored by Haydn, DriverX is a comedy/drama about a character named Leonard (Patrick Fabian, of Better Call Saul), a 50-something music aficionado and former record store owner who, after a run of bad luck, resorts to driving for an Uber-like rideshare company to help support his working wife and two young daughters. Based on the real-life experiences of celebrated writer/director Henry Barrial — also a father of two who drove for Uber for two years — DriverX is Barrial’s fifth feature film.

Lead single, “Ain’t Like It Used To Be” is a rousing song that opens and closes the film. The song was written by Lili Haydn, and produced and performed by Lili with her husband, Itai Disraeli, under the production team moniker The Service Cats. Even though the romping anthem seems jovial, its lyrics speak to the hopelessness and nihilism of the gig economy in which so many find themselves — from the Leonard character in the movie to a real-life working musician in the challenging new world of music streaming.

Lili Haydn and Marvin Etzioni also served as music supervisors for DriverX, and each contributed original songs to the soundtrack — six by Etzioni and four by Haydn (who also scored the film, including six of her original compositions) — along with their curated selections from other artists. The film’s stand-out soundtrack at times evokes such great film soundtrack albums as Ry Cooder’s Paris, Texas or the work of Cooder, Jack Nitsche and Merry Clayton on the soundtrack to Performance with a more diverse and contemporary twist.
