Artist Info: Need Your Loving, the debut EP by the Lafayette, LA native Dwight James and his soul outfit: The Royals, makes a strong case that the southwest corner of the state is fertile ground to more than the familiar Cajun and Zydeco sounds that sprout like sugarcane in the area. Helmed by singer, songwriter, and guitarist Dwight James, The Royals, comprised of Edward Paul Coussan (bass), Blake Pujol (guitar), Denise Gobert (keys), and Gino Vallecillo (drums), serve up a plate of Southern musicality rich in rock, blues, and retro soul that Bandcamp calls “a stellar fusion of past and present.”

Recorded at Leap Studios in Lafayette, James and the Royals enlisted the aid of veteran engineer Paul Broussard, who immediately honed in on and elevated the group’s natural sound. James’ singing voice, a dichotomous instrument akin to smooth gravel, propels every track forward as the vehicle for James’ evocative storytelling. Coussan’s melodic bass lines and Vallecillo’s percussion masterfully anchor all of the sonicality. Tasteful guitar licks from Pujol pepper the extended play, while Mikey Chouest, the band’s former keys player, pads the album with beautiful textures. Gobert appears as backing vocalist for most tunes, but features prominently in the duet Let You Go, and has since taken up the mantle of keys.

The group was quickly recognized after forming, given a Friday evening slot at 2017’s Festival International de Louisiane, as well as headlining the Official Festival International Kick Off Party in 2018. James also performed an acoustic opening set for Anderson East’s show, hosted by 106.3 Radio Lafayette at the Jefferson Street Pub.

The title track off the EP quickly gained traction, receiving airplay on 106.3 Radio Lafayette, a hometown staple, as well as the BBC Radio 6’s Huey Morgan Show in the UK. The album was highlighted by Bandcamp in an article featuring the best new soul records released in April 2018, and the group is now signed with the women-led Brooklyn-based sync agency Low Profile, home to an incredible artist lineup including Mac DeMarco, Empress Of, Masego, and others. James’ only goal is to spread the music, as far as listeners are willing to carry it.
